Xeomin®
What is it? It is a purified form of botulinum toxin type A. This means there are no additives which makes it less likely to cause allergic reactions. Patients who receive Xeomin® are less likely to develop antibodies against the injectable, maintaining the product’s effectiveness.
How is Xeomin® different from the brand name Botox®? Xeomin® is the purified form of the toxin. Studies show some patients have quicker onset of results, longer lasting results and less unwanted reactions.
Why let a dentist inject me? Dentists undergo extensive training to gain an understanding of the face, mouth and muscles that surround these areas. Therefore, dentists are highly qualified to offer facial injections such as Botox®/Xeomin®.
How long does the procedure take? This procedure is quick and easy. It takes as little as 10-15 minutes to complete.
How does Xeomin® work? Xeomin® works to temporarily weaken muscle contractions in the regions where it is injected to smooth/soften existing wrinkles and prevent new ones. When used for TMJ pain/discomfort, Xeomin® causes muscles in the TMJ areas to relax. This helps provide temporary relief of painful headaches as well as clenching and grinding habits. Xeomin® can also be used in conjunction with custom bite splint therapy for dental patients.
How long does it last? Results last, on average, 3-4 months.
Is it safe? Xeomin® has been FDA approved since 2010. A dentist will thoroughly assess concerns, known allergies and medical status to ensure you are a good candidate for facial injections. With that said, all injections come with some risks, but the instance of side effects is rare with most injectables when injected properly.
What areas can be treated?
-Forehead (frontalis muscle): reduces horizontal forehead lines. To treat these, the forehead must also be treated for scowl lines.

-Scowl lines or “11’s” (glabella region)

-Crows feet (outer corner of eyes)

-Gummy Smile: a “Lip Flip” can be performed. This allows more pink of the lips to show and the illusion of a plumper, fuller lip. It may also provide the illusion of shorter upper gums. A small amount of product can be injected beside the nose to aid in this as well.

-TMJ/Facial Slimming: when injected into the temporalis and masseter muscles, Xeomin® can help reduce headaches and minimize TMJ symptoms. Often, when the masseters are injected, a slimmer jawline will result.
